Keylemanjahro School

Life in and around the ‘Dragon’ Keylemanjahro School of Art & Culture in Cocorite, Trinidad,  teaches children and young adults the art of ‘Dancing on Stilts’.  Mastering that art and showing their skills at the annual Carnival, the children call themselves ‘Moko Jumbies’. But costume making, fire blowing and dancing are also part of the daily activities in and around the school yard, which I documented for this photo essay. See my images of the school on the road in Carnival 2007 here

I have been photographing ‘Dragon’ Glen De Souza, the schools founder and leader, and his stilt walking and stilt dancing children since 1996. My work with them until 2004 resulted in the book “MOKO JUMBIES: The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad”. I continue to visit and document the schools activities. I shot this essay after the publication of the book.
