The Haitian painter Nixon Tervine lives in Mexicali (Baja California, Mexico) where he sells his work to northbound travelers at the U.S. â Mexico border crossing.
Like hundreds of Haitian men and women who came to this region to go north Nixon got stranded here because the border was abruptly closed for them by the United States in late 2016. Mexico welcomes the new immigrants and they are now making their home along the border in cities like Mexicali and Tijuana.
Nixon traveled to Mexicali via the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and finally Mexico.
âI would like to cross the border to buy canvas in the United States, and then come straight back. I love Mexicali!â
